Before
Before
The Challenge
Zen Café Tullamore was to open within an existing building envelope that presented both opportunity and constraint. The new cafe needed to:
Utilise existing prep and service areas
Attract customers with a comfortable, welcoming environment
Provide privacy within a public setting
Create a simple, intuitive and efficient customer journey
Comply fully with building regulations
Reuse existing floor finishes to minimise cost
The previous layout lacked clear customer flow and visual impact. Seating arrangements did not maximise comfort or privacy, and the café’s presence within the larger atrium environment needed strengthening.
The design challenge was to transform the space without excessive structural change - enhancing function while working intelligently within constraints.
Before
Design Strategy & Spatial Planning
The foundation of the redesign began with test fits which consists of space planning which tests options for various layouts which allow our clients to see what is possible and further inform their choices and priorities. Detailed layout options were developed to clarify customer movement and improve operational efficiency.
The cafe layout plan communicates to the client:
Order point
Queue direction
Pick-up zone
Seating distribution
Store, service and prep areas
Areas outside project scope
Unobstructed circulation pathways for universal access
By designing a considered order–queue–pickup sequence, the design created a natural, intuitive customer journey. Clear directional flow reduces congestion while improving the overall café experience.
Seating capacity was strategically increased and diversified:
Banquette seating for comfort and privacy
High counter seating with integrated planter dividers
Flexible table arrangements
Suitable seating for diverse clientele
Outdoor seating provision
Planting was introduced not only for aesthetic value but as spatial zoning, subtly separating areas without closing the space.

Interior Styling Brand Alignment
A key objective was aligning the Tullamore location with the established aesthetic of Zen Café Kilkenny.
The design language focused on:
Soft, muted blues
Timber finishes
Clean, contemporary detailing
Calm, welcoming ambience
The material palette was carefully selected to complement the existing floor finish. This reduced unnecessary expenditure while maintaining visual cohesion.
Joinery was introduced in soft blue and natural wood tones to provide warmth within the larger atrium setting. Planter boxes integrated into seating created intimacy without enclosing the space.
Brand presence was enhanced through clear signage and cohesive detailing.

Custom Joinery & Seating Design
Bespoke joinery elements were designed to define the café footprint within the open atrium.
Key features include:
Integrated comfortable banquette seating
Raised planter dividers for privacy
High bar seating along glazed perimeter
Efficient universal service counter redesign
The joinery balances durability with visual softness, critical in a high-traffic healthcare environment.
The service counter area (page 8) was reconfigured to maintain operational efficiency while presenting a more inviting front-of-house aesthetic.
The final completed interior (page 11) demonstrates improved spatial definition, customer comfort and cohesive branding.
Construction and Coordination
Working within an operational environment required careful coordination. Existing preparation and service zones were retained wherever possible to control cost and minimise disruption. All works were strategically planned for delivery during quiet times with minimal impact on the hospital.
